CDC Expresses Preference for mRNA Primary and Booster COVID-19 Vaccine Doses

On Dec. 16, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a recommendation stating that mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (i.e., Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines) are preferred over the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 for all people age 18 years and older. This recommendation is for both primary series and booster doses.

LeadingAge NY is aware that many residents may have received the J&J one-shot in the community or at discharge. Members should provide information on the CDC's position, the health risks associated with the brand, and its reduced protection.

Talking points regarding this updated recommendation are provided by the Department of Health (DOH) here. Individuals have a choice of COVID-19 vaccine, and those who registered for the J&J COVID-19 vaccine but no longer wish to receive it may choose to receive an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.
