CMS Training Videos

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed a series of videos covering the new nursing home survey process that went into effect on Nov. 28, 2017. The videos cover in detail all facets of the process, including areas such as Surveyor Assignments, Initial Pool, Interview/Observation, Facility Tasks, Investigations, and Potential Citations.

The new nursing home survey process combines features of the Traditional Survey and the Quality Indicators Survey (QIS), and while it is a data-driven process, it also allows for greater surveyor input, especially with regard to sample selection.

Surveyors have received training on the new process, but the Department of Health (DOH) has acknowledged that there is a significant learning curve involved in mastering the new process. Historically, when changes in process or regulation have taken place, the number of deficiencies cited often increases, especially in the near-term. It is important for members to become familiar with the new nursing home survey process, and the videos provide an opportunity to do so.
