CMS Releases Additional Data on Nursing Home Ownership

On Sept. 26th, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released additional data on nursing home ownership as part of its ongoing effort to improve transparency, safety and quality, and accountability in the nursing home sector.

With the release of this data, per a CMS press release, state licensing officials, state and federal law enforcement, researchers, and the public will, for the first time, have the ability to identify common owners of nursing homes across multiple locations. CMS notes that this information “can be linked to other data sources to identify the performance of facilities under common ownership, such as owners affiliated with multiple nursing homes with a record of poor performance.”

The data will be posted to data.cms.gov and updated on a monthly basis. While intended to help researchers, states, regulators, and others analyze the impact of nursing home ownership on quality of care, it will also be accessible to consumers on Care Compare beginning Sept. 28th.

More information on the data release is available here.
