CMS Clarifies Its Position on Texting

On Dec. 28, 2017, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) posted Survey and Certification (S&C) Letter 18-10-ALL that clarifies its position as it relates to texting.

Texting patient information among members of the health care team is permissible if accomplished through a secure platform.

Texting of patient orders is prohibited regardless of the platform used.

Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) is the preferred method of order entry.
