Medicare Cost Report Due Date Approaching

COVID-19 delays and interruptions of Medicare cost report filing dates have ended, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has returned to a regular filing schedule. For providers whose fiscal year is the same as the calendar year, the due date of the cost report is May 31st (i.e., the last day of the fifth month following the end of the fiscal year). Cost reports must be submitted electronically through an approved software vendor. The Medicare Cost Report e-Filing system (MCReF) has provided all Medicare Part A providers the ability to electronically file 100 percent of their cost report package, including all supporting documentation, directly to their Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) since 2017. If the report is not submitted timely, or if the report is rejected, payments to the provider are reduced, and a demand letter is issued for payments already made.

Cost Reporting resources on the National Government Services (NGS) website are posted here. The CMS site with electronic filing information, including an e-Filing Manual, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), and an April 2022 educational presentation, is available here.
