Learning to e-File the Medicare Cost Report

Starting with 2017 calendar year Medicare cost reports, Medicare Part A providers have the option of filing their reports using the new Medicare Cost Report e-Filing (MCReF) system. In fact, providers that wish to e-file their MCR must use MCReF, as other electronic options will no longer be available. The streamlined system allows for electronic signature and transmits the report directly to the Medicare Administrative Contractor. To use MCReF, a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Enterprise Identity Management (EIDM) account is required, which is the same account providers use to order copies of their Provider Statistical and Reimbursement Reports (PS&R). Medicare cost reports are due five months from the end of a provider's fiscal year.

The Medicare Learning Network is offering a webcast on March 28th from 1 to 2:30 pm that will help familiarize providers with the system. Although the presentation information is the same as that provided in past events, a question and answer session will follow. Attendees may email questions in advance to OFMDPAOQuestions@cms.hhs.gov with “Medicare Cost Report e-Filing System Webcast” in the subject line. The registration link is available here, and a fact sheet on MCReF is here.
