FFS Advance Beneficiary Notice Extension

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has extended the deadline for using the renewed Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN), Form CMS-R-131, until January 2021 due to COVID-19. The ABN is issued by providers to beneficiaries in situations where Original Medicare (fee-for-service) payment is expected to be denied. Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) must use the ABN for Part B items and services that may be denied.

Although the renewed ABN will be mandatory for use in January 2021, providers may use it prior to the mandatory deadline.
