Nursing Home Clean Energy Initiative

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Department of Health (DOH) are seeking information on nursing home energy usage as part of developing a Clean Energy Initiative for New York State's nursing homes. Legislation enacted last year authorizes DOH to conduct energy efficiency studies of nursing homes to develop cost/benefit analyses of potential modifications for each facility. The studies would serve as the basis for a program DOH would develop that would help homes implement some of the findings. The program could include components such as increasing access to financing for such improvements.

DOH and NYSERDA are working with a firm that is able to identify opportunities for nursing home energy savings by analyzing usage data provided by utilities and other energy providers. The state has identified this as a cost-effective approach to more accurately identify energy savings opportunities and is asking homes to provide authorization for NYSERDA to access their energy utilization records. This approach provides more detail than cost report data would and eliminates the need for homes to complete surveys.

Later this week, members should receive a request to complete and submit a form identifying your energy provider and authorizing the state to obtain energy use records for your home. We encourage you to complete and return the form promptly.
