New Legislation to Limit Opioid Prescribing

In an effort to reduce overprescribing of opioid medications, new legislation was enacted that became effective on July 22, 2016. Initial prescribing for opioids for acute pain is limited to a seven-day supply. The rule does not apply to the prescribing for chronic pain; pain being treated as part of cancer care, hospice, or other end-of-life care; or pain being treated as part of palliative care practices. NYSDOH has issued the guidance related to the change in NYS Public Health Law Section 3331,5. (b) (c). The guidance contains contact information for the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE) for additional information related to the legislation and opioid treatment guidelines.
