Additional Information on Proposal to Expand LeadingAge NY Membership to For-Profit Retirement Housing Providers

Earlier this year, LeadingAge NY shared some information about an exciting opportunity to strengthen the voice of our Retirement Housing service line through an amendment to our bylaws that would open up membership to for-profit Retirement Housing providers. This change, which would apply ONLY to Retirement Housing and NOT allow for-profit providers from other service lines to join LeadingAge NY, is due to be considered at our 2024 Annual Meeting on June 27th.

With the Annual Meeting now less than two months away, we wanted to provide some additional context about the proposal to assist you in preparing to cast your vote. Since 2020, when the national LeadingAge Board of Directors voted to allow for-profit providers to join LeadingAge, 32 of 36 LeadingAge state affiliates have begun accepting for-profit members in some form. Each state, whether they are accepting for-profits as full members or more limited subscriber members, has created a framework that allows them to continue meeting their mission while also taking advantage of new business opportunities. With this proposed change in NY, as recommended by both the LeadingAge NY Retirement Housing Cabinet and the LeadingAge NY Board of Directors, the association has the opportunity to expand to providers who:

  • are already actively working with Retirement Housing Cabinet members in their local networks;
  • are not represented by any other statewide association, and who may have been LeadingAge NY members prior to becoming for-profit;
  • can help us increase our revenue to support our continued advocacy for all service lines; and
  • can help strengthen the voice of our Retirement Housing membership on key legislative and political issues.

More information about this proposal can be found here in our first communication from February, with additional details to be shared in advance of the Annual Meeting. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact Annalyse Komoroske Denio, Jeff Diamond, or Kristen Myers.
