Trump Administration Terminates TPS for Honduras and Nicaragua

(July 7, 2025) The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations for Honduras and Nicaragua. Each of these country-specific designations was set to expire on July 5, 2025. DHS will formally publish the Honduras notification and the Nicaragua notification in the Federal Register on July 8th, and in both cases the notice states that the termination will be effective 60 days following that publication date. DHS estimates that there are approximately 72,000 nationals of Honduras – approximately 21,000 of whom have been granted lawful permanent resident status – and 4,000 nationals of Nicaragua who hold TPS under the respective designations. DHS recognizes and notes that both Nicaragua and Honduras TPS beneficiaries continue to be employment-authorized during the 60-day transition period. LeadingAge National reports that they will continue to compile and highlight information about the status of various immigrant groups in their Pathways for Foreign-Born Workers serial post.
