DataPoint: Workforce Trends

In New York State, 42 percent of home care direct care workers were employed full time, while 32 percent maintained full time status nationwide, according to PHI’s Workforce Data. The study anticipates a 45 percent increase in home care aides by 2024 in the state and a 52 percent increase nationwide. Employment trends from 2006 to 2016 show an overall industry growth of 48 percent statewide, which represented the 13th largest nationwide workforce increase. In New York State, 44 percent of home care workers had health insurance through their employers, while 66 percent of direct care workers in skilled nursing facilities had employer-based health insurance. The workforce data also indicated that in 2015, the median age of New York State nursing home direct care workers was 43, whereas the nationwide median was 36.
