DataPoint: Profile of Long-Term Care Residents, 2015-2016

Based on a nationwide report of 2015-2016 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 52.1 percent of individuals in residential care communities were age 85 and older, making that setting the most popular for that demographic. The CDC report showed that residents of all long-term care settings were primarily female, with the highest proportion of women living in residential care communities (70.6 percent). Medicaid was the primary payer source for 65.8 percent of adult day service centers and for 61.8 percent of nursing homes. The most common diagnosis found among all long-term care settings was hypertension, with the highest proportion found among home health patients (88.9 percent). Alzheimer's disease or other dementias were most prevalent in nursing homes, occurring in nearly 48 percent of residents.
