DataPoint: Nursing Home Staff Turnover

Based on 2017 Residential Health Care Facility (RHCF) Cost Report data analyzed by LeadingAge NY, the median nursing home staff turnover rate was 33 percent, the same as in 2016. During 2017, median staff turnover among not-for-profit homes was 32 percent. The Central New York region’s median staff turnover rate has grown 8 percent since 2015. In 2017, median staff turnover in the Central New York region was 55 percent and 58 percent among nurses (RN, LPN, Aide); both were the highest rates statewide. The Buffalo region’s median staff turnover rate increased from 46 percent in 2015 to 51 percent in 2016 to 54 percent in 2017. Of the nursing home positions reported, turnover among RNs was 44 percent and was higher than turnover for LPNs (33 percent) and CNAs (35 percent). The RN turnover rate was 38 percent in not-for-profit nursing homes and 54 percent in proprietary homes. The New York City region’s RN median turnover rate was 35 percent, which was lowest statewide. In contrast, the Buffalo region’s RN turnover rate was 71 percent, which represented the highest turnover rate statewide.

The figures used to calculate nursing home staff turnover rates were based on data reported on Schedule P of the 2017 RHCF Cost Report. The turnover rate was calculated by dividing the number of reported terminations by the average number of staff members.
