DataPoint: Nursing Home Staff Retention Rates

Based on 2017 Residential Health Care Facility (RHCF) Cost Report data analyzed by LeadingAge NY, the median retention rate for nursing, therapy, and social services staff (excluding contract staff) was 78.2 percent statewide. In the New York City region, median total staff retention was 87.1 percent, which was the highest regional rate in the state. In contrast, the Central New York region’s total staff retention rate was 66.4 percent, the lowest rate in the state. The retention rate for Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) differed significantly between the Central and New York City regions, with homes reporting nearly 30 percent higher retention rates in the New York City region. The statewide median Registered Nurse (RN) staff retention rate of 75 percent was higher among voluntary homes than proprietary homes (72.5 percent). RN staffing was seemingly more difficult in the Buffalo, Rochester, and Central New York regions, with each reporting retention rates below 70 percent.
