DataPoint: Nursing Home Resident Age Distribution

The age composition of nursing home residents in New York State has remained fairly steady over the last three years based on Minimum Data Set (MDS) information compiled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Residents between the ages of 85 and 95 comprised 36 percent of the state’s nursing home population at the end of 2017, with those between 75 and 84 making up 26.2 percent. These proportions were similar to the 2014 figures, with the largest change observed in the 65 to 74 age range (a drop from 18 to 16 percent). Other age groups remained relatively unchanged over time. The distributions were very similar to those in New Jersey and mirrored the overall national age group distribution.
