DataPoint: Nursing Home Health Survey Update

Through the end of October 2018, over half of all nursing homes statewide have been surveyed under the new survey process that began Nov. 28, 2017. During the 11-month period, the Rochester region had the highest average number of deficiencies per home (7.2). Meanwhile, the average number of deficiencies per 100 beds was highest in the Northeast New York and Rochester regions; both regions were cited an average of 5.2 times per home. With over 300 nursing homes surveyed statewide, the median number of deficiencies per surveyed home was four, which is identical to the median number of deficiencies per survey for the period ending September 2017. Under the new survey process, 14.6 percent of the homes surveyed were deficiency-free. The top 10 F-Tags represented 41.6 percent of all New York State deficiencies. The most common deficiencies were providing and implementing an infection prevention and control program, followed by developing and implementing a complete care plan that meets all the resident’s needs, with timetables and actions that can be measured. Each of the two most frequently used citations represented over 7 percent of all New York State citations.
