DataPoint: Nursing Home Deficiencies Through September 2019

Nearly all nursing homes statewide have been surveyed under the new survey process, which began Nov. 28, 2017. Based on data analyzed by LeadingAge NY, the top 10 most frequently cited deficiencies accounted for over 41 percent of all deficiencies through September 2019. The single most frequently cited deficiency was F-880 (Provide and implement an infection prevention and control program), followed by F-656 (Develop and implement a complete care plan that meets all the resident's needs, with timetables and actions that can be measured), with each representing more than 7 percent of all citations. The most frequently cited deficiency categories were Quality of Life and Care Deficiencies, followed by Resident Assessment and Care Planning Deficiencies. Statewide, the average number of deficiencies per home was 4.8. Meanwhile, the highest number of total deficiencies (592), highest number of average deficiencies per home (9), and lowest number of deficiency-free surveys (1) were all in the Northeastern region. Nearly 12 percent of the homes surveyed under the new survey process were deficiency-free, while fewer than 5 percent of homes were deficiency-free in the Rochester, Buffalo, and Northeastern regions.
