DataPoint: National Health Expenditures

Total nursing care facility spending increased 2.8 percent in 2016, slower than the rate of overall health care spending. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of the Actuary's 2016 National Expenditure report, Medicaid spending on nursing home care also grew slower when compared to spending growth in overall national Medicaid spending. Overall Medicaid spending grew 3.9 percent to $565.5 billion, while nursing care facility Medicaid spending increased 0.9 percent to $49.9 billion. Nursing care facilities represented 4.9 percent of overall health spending in 2016. The CMS expenditure report also includes home care spending data. In 2016, home care spending grew to $92 billion, an increase of 3.8 percent since 2015 and 22.5 percent since 2010.
