DataPoint: Medicare Utilization

Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) beneficiaries aged 65 and older utilized 25.72 covered days per admission nationwide in 2016, down from 27.07 days in 2013, based on a LeadingAge NY analysis of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data. Utilization in non-hospital-based skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) was 24.25 covered days of care per covered admission in organizations with 1 to 49 beds, while larger organizations with at least 200 beds utilized 27.82 days of care per admission. Medicare FFS beneficiaries aged 65 plus with 21 to 40 days of care represented 24.1 percent of total payments. Additionally, Medicare FFS beneficiaries aged 75 plus represented 36 percent of Medicare Part A enrollment while accounting for 67.6 percent of total SNF Medicare FFS utilization and 68.5 percent of total program payments. New York State ranked sixth nationally with 28.19 covered days of care per covered admission, fourth in both total days and rehabilitation days, and third in clinically complex days.
