DataPoint: Hospice Payment and Utilization

23.8 percent of New York’s Medicare hospice beneficiaries needed more than 60 days of hospice care. Wyoming, with 20.2 percent, is the only state that saw a lower percentage of hospice service beyond 60 days. In contrast, New York had the sixth largest percentage (31.9 percent) of hospice beneficiaries with seven or fewer hospice care days. New York’s Medicare hospice spending ($456 million) ranked 10th nationally and exceeded the national median ($199 million) by a considerable margin.

More Medicare-related hospice information on utilization, payments, and diagnosis by hospice provider and state is available on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospice Utilization and Payment Public Use File website.
