DataPoint: Hospice 2017

Based on 2017 Hospice Cost and Utilization Report data, Medicare accounted for 91.5 percent of the beneficiary days for a typical hospice, up from 89.6 percent in 2014. Medicaid accounted for 0.7 percent of hospice payer days in 2017, while other sources represented 7.0 percent. Statewide, 40.2 percent of all hospice beneficiary discharges occurred within the first seven days of service, and nearly 70 percent occurred in fewer than 31 days. Additionally, 41.6 percent of discharges in the Western New York region were shorter than seven days, while these short stays represented 33.4 percent of discharges in the Central New York region. In the Metropolitan New York region, 7.4 percent of discharges were for stays longer than 180 days, the highest regional long stay percentage. In the Capital Region, 33.7 percent of hospice discharges were for stays longer than 31 days, higher than any other region statewide.
