DataPoint: Home Health Payment and Utilization Trends

Based on recently released Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) home health utilization and payment data, total Medicare episodes in New York State increased to over 228,000 in 2015, up from 225,000 in 2014. Distinct beneficiaries exceeded 163,000, representing a 2 percent increase from 2014. The average number of total visits per episode has trended downward since 2013. In 2015, median total visits per episode dropped to 19.4 statewide and 17.4 nationwide. From 2013 to 2015, the average age of Medicare home health beneficiaries was 78.
