DataPoint: Health Care Workforce Trends in New York State

Based on a report issued by the Center for Health Workforce Studies (CHWS), in New York State, the health care workforce grew by over 34 percent from 2000 to 2017. All other employment sectors grew by approximately 6 percent. New York State’s health care employment trends were consistent with national trends, which saw health care employment increase by 20 percent from 2006 to 2016. In the New York City region, health care jobs grew by over 15 percent from 2013 to 2017, which was nearly double the growth rate for all other regions. While health care jobs grew faster in the New York City region, upstate economies also relied on health care employment growth. From 2000 to 2017, upstate health care jobs increased by over 26 percent, while non-health care jobs grew by less than 1 percent. The CHWS study also revealed that during 2017, home health care accounted for 17.7 percent of New York State health care employment, while nursing home and personal care facilities accounted for 13.8 percent. Additionally, between 2000 and 2017, home health care jobs in New York State tripled, adding over 140,000 jobs.
