DataPoint: Cost of Long Term Care, 2019

Based on over 3,500 surveys completed by nursing homes for the annual Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the 2019 median annual cost of care in nursing home private rooms is $102,200 nationwide, representing a 1.82 percent increase since 2018. Nursing home private room annual costs are expected to increase by 15.9 percent by 2024 and 34.4 percent by 2029. In New York State, the median annual cost of a private room is $148,190, up by 1.3 percent since 2018 and 4.4 percent since 2017. Both the Metro New York City and Rochester region costs have grown by 3.8 percent since 2018, while the Buffalo region’s median private room cost has decreased by nearly 4 percent.

Some of the largest one-year increases occurred in the home care setting. Nationwide, the 2019 median monthly cost of home health aide services is $4,385, up by 4.5 percent since 2018. Median spending is expected to have additional growth of 16 percent by 2024. In New York State, the monthly cost is $4,957, which is 13 percent higher than the national median.
