DataPoint: Adult Day Services by Ownership

In 2016, an estimated 286,300 participants were enrolled in adult day services centers nationwide. The 2016 National Study of Long-Term Care Providers (NSLTCP) performed by the National Center for Health Statistics found that in not-for-profit (NFP) adult day services centers, 58 percent of participants had some or all of their services paid by Medicaid, while in proprietary centers, the figure was 73 percent. In contrast, NFP organizations had a higher percentage of participants diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias (37 percent) than for-profit adult day services centers (26 percent). The percentage of participants needing assistance with selected activities of daily living also differed based on ownership classification. NFP adult day services organizations had a higher percentage of participants needing assistance with bathing (41 percent) compared to their for-profit counterparts (37 percent). The NSLTCP also revealed that NFP adult day services centers were more likely to serve participants who had fallen within the previous 90 days (10 percent) than for-profit centers (6 percent).
