DataPoint: 2019 Nursing Home Margins

Based on LeadingAge NY analysis of 2019 Residential Health Care Facility (RHCF) Cost Reports received from the Department of Health (DOH), the statewide median operating margin was 1.29 percent. Statewide, 40.1 percent of homes reported a negative operating margin for 2019, which was 4.3 percentage points higher than for 2018. The percentage of homes operating with a negative operating margin was higher among voluntary homes, with nearly 60.8 percent reporting losses. The median operating margin for voluntary homes was -2.6 percent, while proprietary homes reported a median operating margin of 2.5 percent. Negative margins were reported by 90.5 percent of public homes and 29.0 percent of proprietary homes.
