DataPoint: 2019 NH Private Pay Residents

In 2019, private pay accounted for 7.5 percent of nursing home resident days. Median private pay utilization stood at 6.0 percent of all resident days statewide, down from 6.2 percent in 2018 and 6.3 percent in 2017 based on Residential Health Care Facility (RHCF) cost report information obtained from the Department of Health (DOH). The Buffalo region reported the highest regional private pay median of 11.8 percent, followed by the Central New York and Rochester regions, with median private pay utilization of 11.3 percent and 10.8 percent, respectively. The lowest private pay utilization was in New York City (1.4 percent of overall days). Statewide, the median private pay utilization for non-profit nursing homes (11.5 percent) was nearly three times that of proprietary homes (4.1 percent).
