DataPoint: 2019 National Health Expenditures

Total national health care spending increased by 4.6 percent in 2019, down from a 4.8 percent increase in 2018, according to a study conducted by the Office of the Actuary at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The 4.6 percent health care spending growth in 2019 exceeded the 4.0 percent overall economic growth measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Health care expenditures reached $3.8 trillion, or $11,582 per person, representing 17.7 percent of overall spending.

Nursing care facilities and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) represented 4.5 percent of total health care spending. Total spending in freestanding nursing care facilities and CCRCs increased by 3.3 percent in 2019 to $172.6 billion, up from a 2.3 percent increase in 2018. Home health care, representing 3 percent of health care spending, increased by 7.7 percent in 2019 to $113.5 billion.
