DataPoint: 2018 Retention Ratio

Based on Residential Health Care Facility (RHCF) Cost Report data analyzed by LeadingAge NY, the median nursing home total staff (nursing, therapy, and social workers) retention rate was 78.6 percent statewide, up from 78.2 percent in 2017 and 77.2 percent in 2016. A higher staff retention rate indicates a home’s ability to keep staff throughout the year. In the Buffalo region, total staff retention decreased by 4.7 percentage points, from 72.4 percent in 2017 to 67.7 percent in 2018. Median aide retention was 75 percent among voluntary homes and 81.1 percent in proprietary homes. The highest total nursing (aide, licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN)) retention rate was 87.1 percent in the New York City region. In contrast, the lowest total nursing retention rate was 65.7 percent in the Central New York region.

The figures used to calculate nursing home staff retention rates were based on data reported on Schedule P of the 2018 RHCF Cost Report. To download the 2018 LeadingAge NY Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Nursing Staff Retention and Turnover worksheet from the LeadingAge NY Data page, click here.
