DataPoint: 2018 Length of Stay

Based on LeadingAge NY's analysis of 2018 Residential Health Care Facility (RHCF) Medicaid cost report data, 55.5 percent of nursing home discharges occurred within 30 days of admission. Discharges with a length of stay of at least one year represented 8.9 percent of all discharges, down from 9.1 percent in 2017. Among not-for-profit nursing homes, 62.3 percent of stays were shorter than 30 days, compared to 51.8 percent in proprietary homes. Statewide, 20 percent of stays exceeded 90 days. In the Northeastern New York region, nearly a quarter of all stays were more than 90 days, higher than any other region.
