DataPoint: 2017 Total Medicaid Managed Care Spending

Total national Medicaid spending was $571 billion during federal fiscal year (FFY) 2017, according to estimates of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data. Total Medicaid managed care spending was estimated to reach $297 billion, up from $271 billion in FFY 2016, and saw its lowest one-year growth (9.5 percent) since FFY 2007. In the 40 states and territories with risk-based managed care organization (MCO) contracts, average spending increased 10.3 percent. New York State’s Medicaid managed care spending growth of 42 percent during FFY 2017 was the fourth highest nationwide. MCO spending accounted for 64.6 percent of total Medicaid expenditures in New York State, which represented a 7.2 percent increase from FFY 2016 to FFY 2017.
