DataPoint: 2017 Length of Stay

Based on LeadingAge NY's analysis of 2017 Residential Health Care Facility (RHCF) Medicaid cost report data, 55.6 percent of nursing home discharges occurred within 30 days of admission. Discharges with a length of stay of at least one year represented 9.1 percent of all discharges, up from 8.6 percent in 2016. Among not-for-profit nursing homes, nearly 61 percent of stays were shorter than 30 days, compared to 52.6 percent in proprietary homes. Statewide, 19.6 percent of stays exceeded 90 days. In the Northeastern New York region, more than a quarter of all stays were more than 90 days, higher than any other region.
