CMS Releases National Health Expenditure Projections

Total nationwide health care spending is expected to grow an average of 5.5 percent from 2018 to 2027, reaching nearly $6 trillion, according to a recently released Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) report. During that time period, nursing care facility annual average expenditures are projected to grow by 5 percent nationwide, up from a 2 percent increase during 2017. Home Health spending is projected to grow by 6.8 percent annually.

Health spending is projected to represent a greater share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increasing from 17.9 percent in 2017 to 19.4 percent in 2027. Average Medicare spending growth is projected to be 7.4 percent annually, while private health insurance is projected to rise by an annual average of 4.8 percent.
