New NYAM and CMS Resources for Nursing Homes

Nursing home members are encouraged to take advantage of two new resources from the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) designed to equip staff with the latest information regarding infection prevention and control, COVID-19 preparedness, resident-centered care, vaccine distribution, and other important topics.

NYAM’s Infection Prevention Compendium for Long-Term Care Facilities, developed in partnership with the Yale School of Nursing, provides an extensive list of resources for direct care providers, administrators, support staff, residents, and families in four evidence-based sections: (1) infection prevention tools; (2) U.S. and international infection control resources; (3) supporting research; and (4) teaching tools. The CMS Targeted COVID-19 Training for Frontline Nursing Home Staff and Management, developed by CMS in consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and expert stakeholders, consists of a series of scenario-based trainings aimed at sharing knowledge around ways to protect residents, provide care, and prevent the spread of COVID-19. The training for frontline staff emphasizes topics such as infection screening and surveillance, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, disinfection techniques, cohorting, and caring for individuals with dementia during a pandemic. The management training also focuses on infection control and cleanliness, but reviews facility-wide issues like telehealth, vaccine delivery, and emergency preparedness as well. More information on the CMS training is available here.
