New Long Term Care Survey Process

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has posted a presentation focusing on the new Long Term Care Survey process for nursing homes. The implementation date is Nov. 28, 2017. According to CMS, the new survey process focuses on being resident centered, automated, structured, and allowing surveyor autonomy. The goal of the new process is to incorporate new innovative approaches as well as strengths from the Traditional and QIS survey processes.

There are three parts to the new survey process:

  1. Initial pool process;
  2. Sample selection; and
  3. Investigation.

In addition, there will be required tasks and other survey activities – closed record review, dining, infection control, medication management and storage, staffing, resident council, Influenza and Pneumo vaccinations, antibiotic stewardship program, SNF beneficiary notices, competencies, and QAA/QAPI.

Over the next few months, LeadingAge NY will be providing educational sessions to help members prepare for the change to the survey process.
