How to Improve Staffing Data Availability in 10 Minutes

Members regularly identify recruiting and retaining staff as a significant concern, and these issues are a primary focus of the Association’s advocacy efforts. To engage in a productive discussion with policymakers, stakeholders must have current and accurate data on the staffing challenges that providers, especially providers of long term care services, face. The most comprehensive source of such state and regional data is the Center for Health Workforce Studies (CHWS) at the University at Albany’s School of Public Health.

In partnership with LeadingAge NY and other associations, CHWS is currently conducting a survey of nursing homes, assisted living, and home care providers on recruitment and retention issues. We strongly urge members to take the 5-10 minute online survey to help ensure that their experiences are reflected in the collected data. The nursing home and adult care facility/assisted living survey is available here. The home care survey is here.

CHWS monitors annual health care employment trends in the state of New York and issues a report of its findings each year. The most recent report, The Health Care Workforce in New York, 2017-2018: Trends in the Supply and Demand for Health Workers, can be found here.

Questions about the survey can be addressed to Kris Stiegler at 518-402-0250 or kstiegler@albany.edu.
