New Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) Card Training

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will host a National Training Program to review the new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) Card educational resources. The CMS webinar will take place on Thurs., March 8th from 1 to 2:30 pm EST. To register for the webinar, click here.

The process of replacing Social Security Number (SSN)-based Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICN) from Medicare cards begins April 1, 2018, when new MBI cards will be mailed and all providers are required to have the ability to process MBI cards. April 1, 2018 also marks the beginning of a 21-month transition period during which both HICN and MBI cards will be accepted. MBI cards will be mailed out in phases based on geographic regions. New York State MBI cards will be mailed after June 2018 in the fourth of seven mailing phases with other northeastern states.

Additional guidance for providers can be found on the LeadingAge NY website and the CMS webpage designed specifically for providers preparing for the transition to MBI. CMS Open Door Forum slides are available here.
