CDC Releases NEW Enhanced Barrier Precaution Resources

The CDC has released new resources on enhanced barrier precautions (EBP). Although these precautions are not currently required for nursing homes, EBP’s are recommended by the CDC to reduce transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). CMS added a special section on MDROs to the updated guidance (Appendix PP of the State Operations Manual) last year. With CMS increasing its attention on infection control and prevention related to MDROs, these resources are extremely helpful with staff training and education. You can find these resources by selecting from the following links below:

Leading Age National has indicated that surveyors may potentially be looking at EBP on survey.  It is important for nursing homes to have something in place to prevent the spread of MDROs.  If a facility chooses not to implement enhanced barrier precautions, they will need to put something else in place.  You can access a previous Leading Age NY article on EBP here, and the CDC recommendations here
