NYC Event Explores Challenges and Opportunities in Developing, Operating Senior Housing with Services

On Wed., Oct. 26, 2022, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York hosted an in-person event to explore opportunities and challenges to developing and operating affordable senior housing with services in the Second District. Among the speakers were LeadingAge NY member provider Claire Guerette, executive director of St. Margaret’s House in New York City, and former officials from the New York State Department of Health (DOH).

Panelists described the challenges they have faced in developing and operating affordable senior housing that includes various levels of support, as well as some of the ways they have overcome those challenges to successfully offer models ranging from Service Coordination in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-assisted multifamily properties to affordable assisted living. Common barriers noted included lack of operating funding, restrictive regulations and policies, and communication breakdowns between health and housing stakeholders.

Members can watch the event here when the recording is made available.
