HEAP Cooling Assistance Available Now

Assistance is available now through the New York State Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) to help low-income individuals and families without air conditioning stay cool this summer. Under newly expanded eligibility guidelines for the program, the cooling component is expected to serve up to 20,000 households throughout the state.

Previously, HEAP cooling assistance was only available to income-eligible households that included an individual suffering from a documented medical condition exacerbated by extreme heat. Under the amended guidelines, applicants must simply meet HEAP eligibility criteria and income thresholds to qualify.

Applications for cooling assistance will be accepted at local social services departments through Aug. 31st, or until funding runs out. Assistance will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
