HUD Workforce Down 30 Percent
(April 22, 2025) As LeadingAge has heard from informal sources, The New York Times is reporting that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has already cut its staff by thousands since President Donald Trump was inaugurated on Jan. 20th. The loss of staff has been caused by terminating probationary staff, dismissing field management staff below General Schedule (GS)-13, and about 2,300 HUD employees taking voluntary deferred resignation.
In 2024, HUD had about 7,900 employees. All told, these staffing cuts equal at least 30 percent of HUD’s workforce. Meanwhile, additional large reductions in force are expected in the coming months, likely to be announced after HUD Secretary Scott Turner testifies before Congress to discuss and defend his forthcoming request for funding for fiscal year 2026, expected in May.
