DOH Seeks Input on Advance Care Planning

As a follow-up to the Governor's commitment in the 2018 State of the State to educate New Yorkers about advance care planning, the Department of Health (DOH) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather input from the public, health care providers, and long term care organizations on current policy and practice regarding this issue. This information will assist the State in its comprehensive review of this matter with the goal of moving the needle on awareness and practice of advance care planning.

Specifically, DOH seek input on the following:

  • Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (MOLST);
  • Nonhospital Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) forms; and
  • Health Care Proxy forms.

The Department would like to know if these documents are appropriate and understandable to the general public. It also seeks input, data, educational guidance and materials, language changes, and other knowledge to assist the Department in moving forward on educating and engaging the general public on the issues and practice of advance care planning.

Please take a look at the RFI on advance care planning. LeadingAge NY will be offering comments on this RFI. Members can send comments to the Department individually or to Meg Everett at meverett@leadingageny.org for inclusion in LeadingAge NY's public comment letter. Comments are due Nov. 16, 2018.
