Medication Aide Legislation Introduced in the Assembly

Last week, Assemblymember Sarah Clark (Rochester) and Assembly Health Committee Chair Amy Paulin partnered on the introduction of bill A.8299, which would authorize the training and hiring of Certified Medication Aides (CMAs) in nursing homes statewide. LeadingAge NY has long advocated for legislation that would authorize Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) who receive advanced training and become CMAs to administer medications in nursing homes under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).

The authorization of CMAs in nursing homes would not only enhance the quality of care for older adults residing in nursing homes, but it would also improve professional development and satisfaction of nurses and aides. Authorizing CMAs in nursing homes would enhance CNA career ladders and allow RNs and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to focus on higher-level tasks such as complex wound care, monitoring resident respiratory functions, and collaborating with other medical professionals, thereby mitigating nursing shortages and improving the quality of care.

According to recent research, at least 33 other states already permit and use Medication Aides in nursing home settings. To finally authorize the role in NY, members are encouraged to contact their State Assemblymembers and ask them to sign on to A.8299 (Clark) and support the authorization of CMAs in NY's nursing homes!
