Trump Administration Terminates TPS for Immigrants from Honduras and Nicaragua

(July 15, 2025) The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations for both Honduras and Nicaragua. The terminations, published in the Federal Register on July 8, 2025, will take effect 60 days later, on Sept. 8, 2025. The notices can be found here and here.

According to DHS estimates, approximately 72,000 Honduran nationals and 4,000 Nicaraguan nationals currently hold TPS. According to DHS, of these Honduran nationals, about 21,000 have adjusted to lawful permanent resident (LPR) status.

Transition Period and Employment Authorization

The DHS secretary has decided not to exercise her discretion to extend the transition period for Honduran and Nicaraguan TPS holders beyond the 60-day minimum. During the 60-day transition period, TPS beneficiaries from both countries will retain their employment authorization, and DHS has automatically extended the validity of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) through Sept. 8, 2025. DHS advises employers to continue accepting these documents as valid proof of work authorization.

Impact on Aging Services Providers

Many TPS holders are employed in essential roles across the health care continuum, including home care, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. The potential loss of work authorization for thousands of individuals could exacerbate existing workforce shortages. LeadingAge National and LeadingAge NY continue to monitor federal immigration policy developments and their implications for the aging services sector. As part of its ongoing Pathways for Foreign-Born Workers serial post, LeadingAge National will continue to highlight evolving policies affecting immigrant workers and explore strategies to support the aging services workforce.
