Guidance on Application for Sprinkler Extension Issued by CMS

CMS S&C letter14-29 outlines key information for those nursing homes that seek an extension of the August 2013 requirement that all nursing homes be equipped with an automatic sprinkler system.  The application would provide an extension, in some cases, of up to two years, but would only be permitted in situations where the facility was undergoing replacement or major modifications.  Additionally the facility would have to have obtained the financial committment for the building replacement or modification, have filed its plan with the State and local authority, and put into place additional interim protections (i.e. additional training, fire watch, temporary detection systems) to improve resident safety.
