CMS Temporarily Freezes Nursing Home Care Compare Updates to Validate Data Integrity

(August 18, 2025)  On August 15, 2025, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a temporary freeze on updates to the Nursing Home Care Compare website, including Five-Star Quality Ratings and monthly health inspection data. This pause will remain in effect until October 29, 2025, when the next scheduled quarterly refresh is expected.

The freeze follows the successful migration of all nursing home survey and certification data to the Internet Quality Improvement and Evaluation System (iQIES). CMS is using this interim period to validate the integrity of the newly integrated data infrastructure, ensuring that publicly reported information continues to meet rigorous quality and accuracy standards.

What Nursing Homes Need to Know

During the freeze:

  • No updates will be made to star ratings or inspection results on the Care Compare website.
  • Nursing homes are still required to display their most recent survey findings in a publicly accessible area within the facility.
  • Members of the public may continue to request federal inspection records, including CMS compliance documentation, through standard channels.
