LeadingAge NY: Fund Affordable Senior Housing and Resident Assistance in 2022
LeadingAge NY is gearing up to advocate for a comprehensive five-year State spending plan for affordable housing in the State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2022-23 budget negotiations, expected to begin in January with the first State of the State Address and Executive Budget Proposal of Governor Kathy Hochul’s tenure.
Following the December release of a report prepared in coalition by advocates and experts of the state’s current affordable housing need, LeadingAge NY will continue to support the implementation of a comprehensive new five-year spending plan and will recommend the inclusion of at least $200 million in capital funding for affordable independent senior housing, as well as $25 million to establish a new Affordable Independent Senior Housing Resident Assistance Program.
Resident assistants would connect older adults living in affordable housing with existing community programs and resources that can extend their ability to live independently and age safely in place.
LeadingAge NY previously submitted written testimony to the State Assembly Committee on Housing regarding its Oct. 27th hearing to review the SFY 2021-22 budget for the Division of Housing and Community Renewal, recommending at least $140 million in a new five-year capital spending plan for senior housing and $10 million over five years to establish the Resident Assistance Program.
