Mandatory e-Prescribing Law Brings Challenges

The Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement recently presented a webinar related to the mandatory e-prescribing process that is fast approaching.  Facilities and practitioners have different challenges, and different guidelines to follow as this process rolls out.  Computer applications utilized for e-prescribing must meet federal security requirements and must be registered with the NYS Department of Health, Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.  The NYS DOH e-prescribing website has additional information related to the security requirements.

Some facilities are noting challenges meeting these security guidelines and electronic credentialing and authentication processes.  Others have communicated challenges with dispensing of medications following verbal authorization without computerized authorization from the physician.

It is recommended that facilities begin this process early to have time to troubleshoot problems with security and clinical logistics of the ordering process to ensure compliance with the March 27, 2015 deadline, and ensure residents are receiving medications timely.

LeadingAge NY is working with other provider associations to advocate on behalf of facilities to the NYS DOH and the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement as the deadline nears.  Please forward any concerns you may have, or challenges you have encountered, to our attention, as we are formulating programs and guidance to assist facilities through this process.
