Nursing Homes Can Offer Outpatient Therapies

From time to time, LeadingAge NY receives inquiries from member nursing homes on offering outpatient therapy services. A new LeadingAge NY memo provides general information on:

  • the types of therapy services that can be offered on an outpatient basis;
  • methods for offering such services;
  • a comparison of service delivery options;
  • the process of adding outpatient therapies to a nursing home operating certificate;
  • Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement issues; and
  • other considerations in initiating an outpatient therapy program.

Outpatient therapy programs can contribute to the organization’s overall success by increasing referrals to its other service lines, enhancing continuity of care, building expertise and reputation, and making more effective use of existing therapy staff and space.

We welcome member questions and feedback on this guidance.
